“In order to create the kind of art I wish to create, art that lends some light to darkness, that makes a contribution beyond color and texture, sound and form, I need to step aside from the chaos of daily life and open channels to a higher frequency, tuning into the language of spirit, the voice of the muse.”

Taos Watercolor Retreat September 1-5, 2008

This is sure to be our most incredible watercolor retreat so far. The energy and history of Taos will amaze you, as will the beautiful spots we’ll be visiting and painting. We have changed where we are staying to the more luxurious Casa Benavides B & B Inn for your comfort. Take some time to visit the websites listed on the directions page so you can fully appreciate all this retreat has to offer!

Monday, Sept. 1   Meet at the De la Tierra in the El Monte Sagrado Spa-Hotel for lunch at 11 AM This place is “over the top” and a perfect start to our retreat. This 4 diamond award winning restaurant is a true culinary experience. You can check the menu at www.elmontesagrado.com

Next we’ll head to San Fransisco de Asis Church,(also called Rancho Taos Church), one of the most photographed and painted churches in the Southwest. We’ll want to paint until the sun is low in the sky to capture the unique shadows.

We’ll check into our rooms at the adorable, luxurious Casa Benavides, featuring original art and gourmet breakfasts.  We’ll meet in the big room for a critique of the day, snack and a glass of wine. Dinner is at Apple Tree Restaurant, casual fine dining in a historical Territorial House. After dinner we will gather each night to discuss our day, encourage each other and I will accept feedback to ensure this is the best experience possible for you. For those with energy left, maybe a soak in the hot tub.

Tuesday, Sept. 2   We’ll begin our day with some stretching and meditation, setting our intention for the day. After breakfast, we will head to the Taos Pueblo to take a tour of this National Historic Landmark  which has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. Remember to ask before photographing any tribal members.

Lunch is at the Trading Post where you can watch the chef at work. Afterwards we’ll tour the Mabel Dodge Luhan House and then spend 2 hours in the garden learning to personalize your paintings by capturing your unique vision. Afterwards there will be free time when you can continue painting, take a nap or perhaps get a massage. We’ll meet for our wine and critique before dinner. Dinner will be New Mexican fare at Orlando’s New Mexican Café.

Wednesday, Sept. 3 Again we’ll begin our day with breathing and stretching and a guided meditation to get our creative juices flowing. After a gourmet breakfast, we’re off to visit the Taos Art Museum & Fechin House where we will sketch and paint for a spell in the garden. After lunch  at Bent Street Deli & Café, we will tour the Millicent Rogers Museum. There will be a lesson on mixing color before our evening critique and dinner will be at Graham’s Grille offering honest, creative food at a good price.

Thursday, Sept. 4  After our morning ritual and breakfast, we will head out to the Rio Grande Gorge which boasts the second highest cantilever bridge in the US. This is one of the most spectacular sights to be found anywhere. After lunch, we will stroll Taos Plaza looking at art and shopping. I will do a demonstration on site for those interested in simplifying elements for a better composition.

Tonight we will dine at award winning Doc Martin’s Restaurant in the historic Taos Inn. We may choose to listen to live music afterwards across the lobby in the Adobe Bar.

Friday Sept. 5  Our last day and it’s gone by too fast! We’ll stretch and breathe and set our intentions not just for the day but how to nurture our new found creativity when we return home. After breakfast, there will be a painting demonstration on caressing the paint for desired effects and combining other media into your watercolor work. After check out we’ll paint a few hours before parting ways.

Schedule subject to change due to weather etc. You may consider extending your trip before or after this retreat by adding Santa Fe or Ghost Ranch to your travels.
